Volunteer Fair/Tree Planting Activities Hosted by Buckman

Memphis, TN (November 5, 2010):

Local manufacturer Buckman is hosting an in-house Volunteer Fair/Tree Planting for all Memphis employees on Friday, November 5, at the corporate headquarters on 1256 N. McLean Blvd. Beginning at 10:00 a.m. employees of the company will plant 54 trees on vacant lots owned by Buckman in the immediate neighborhood. Trees and mulch are provided by the firm, with employees supplying the muscle for this green venture.

On the same day, a Volunteer Fair will be held from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm in Buckman's main breakroom, offering staff the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of company-sponsored local volunteer activities. One upcoming volunteer activity is the Wolf River Conservancy tree planting on February 5, 2011. The Wolf River Conservancy plants trees to reduce erosion in the Wolf River flood plain. Each year they plant about 2,000 trees at various points along the Wolf River.
These two events are part of Buckman's sustainability initiatives which encompass the responsible management of environmental, social, and financial resources. Throughout Buckman's 65 year history, green has been the company's corporate color. Today "Buckman Green" signifies its commitment to a sustainable future.
Buckman continually implements new ways to reduce our environmental footprint. For example, the company is carefully monitoring and reducing carbon emissions at all manufacturing sites and devising strategies to lower our energy and water consumption. In addition, Buckman owns 4,000 acres of preserved forestland in Missouri that sequesters far more carbon dioxide than is generated by all its global manufacturing locations combined.

Buckman believes that sustainability is not only about protecting the environment but also involves achieving and maintaining a high quality of life for our local and global communities. Buckman recognizes that strong, vibrant communities where educational opportunities and health and human services are readily available are crucial to raising the quality of life for everyone. That's why the company supports volunteer service organizations such as Habitat for Humanity, The Red Cross, and the United Way. Buckman's Chairman of the Board Katherine Buckman Gibson is a board member of United Way of the Mid-South, and also served as the 2008 Campaign Chair. The company has contributed to civic and charitable organizations since its very beginnings in 1945 when Dr. Stanley and Mertie Buckman established the company after the war. Dedication to reducing risks to the environment, maintaining a safe workplace, and operating an ethical, quality-driven company have been foundational objectives for over 65 years.
