Enzymes are naturally occurring proteins produced by organisms for the purpose of speeding up chemical reactions which are beneficial to the organisms. Given that enzymes are proteins, they are very low toxicity and of course biodegradable. Enzymes are made from renewable raw materials and are isolated through the growth of microorganisms which produce them.
This gives enzymes a big advantage over petroleum based dry strength resins and energy intensive refining.
